Hardware is often described as the “jewelry of your cabinets”. Similar to how jewelry can enhance an outfit, this small adjustment can completely change the look of your room.
We recently updated our kitchen cabinets, and selecting the hardware took some time. I’ve been particularly inspired by English kitchens, especially the designs by deVOL Kitchens. I’ve always appreciated cup bin pulls and beautiful brass finishes, so I ultimately chose brass. Given my limited budget for this project, I decided to search for affordable hardware on Amazon. Things to Consider When Choosing Hardware
1. Color Scheme
Evaluate the existing color palette in the room. If your cabinets are painted a bold color, opt for more neutral hardware to balance the space. Conversely, if your cabinets are neutral, you might choose hardware that adds a pop of color or a metallic finish for visual interest.
2. Style of the Space
The overall style of your space—be it modern, traditional, farmhouse, or industrial—should influence your hardware color. Sleek, minimalist designs pair well with matte black or brushed nickel, while ornate styles may benefit from polished brass or antique finishes.
3. Material and Finish
Different materials and finishes can reflect light differently and alter the room’s ambiance. For a warm, inviting feel, consider oil-rubbed bronze or brass. For a cooler, more contemporary vibe, chrome or stainless steel can be the right choice.
5. Size and Functionality
The size and scale of your cabinet hardware should be proportionate to the cabinets themselves. Larger cabinets can typically support bigger hardware, while smaller cabinets may look best with more delicate pieces. If you have a pullout drawer more than 30” wide, consider using two pulls like the image below.
Tips for Installation
Measure Carefully: Use a measuring tape to determine the placement of your hardware. Mark the positions lightly with a pencil to ensure accuracy.
Use a Template: If you're installing multiple pieces of hardware, create or purchase a template. This will help maintain consistent spacing and alignment. Cardboard or card stock works well for a DIY template.
Pre-drill Holes: To avoid splitting the wood, pre-drill holes for your screws using a drill bit that is slightly smaller than the screw diameter.
Level Your Hardware: When attaching handles or knobs, use a level to ensure they are aligned properly. This step can make a significant difference in the overall appearance.
Stay Consistent: If you have multiple cabinets, maintain the same height and orientation for the hardware across all doors and drawers for a cohesive look.
